Top Level Domains - Explanations
In response to several requests in regards to the different Domain Name suffixes and there purpose I have put together a brief explanation for the most common TLD’s (Top Level Domains)
If you are thinking of building a web site, here is guide to choosing the right domain suffix. The type of web site you are building or the goal of your web site should determine the suffix that you use. Here are some examples of domain suffixes that are popular:
.com for Communication
This is by far the most popular top level domain suffix available. However since it is the most popular and has been around the longest it is becoming more difficult to find a good name, although a patient search or even looking through deleted domains often draws out some gems. Most people think the .com means commerce because it is commonly used for commercial sites.
.org for Organization
Commonly used by groups or organizations for websites to update their members. This suffix can be used for commercial web sites.
.net for Network
If you have a network of associates or businesses then this is a good top level domain suffix to use. Alternatively it is a good option if the required .com name is not available. This suffix can be used for commercial web sites.
.gov for Government
Only government entities can use this top level domain. This suffix can not be used for a commercial web site.
.edu for Education
Only educational institutions can use this top level domain. This suffix can not be used for a commercial web site.
.info for Information
.info is a relatively new top level domain that is mainly used for informational purposes. However, you can use this domain for commercial use.
